What are urban food deserts?

A food desert is a geographic area where affordable and nutritious food is difficult to obtain, including fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, and dairy products. Food deserts usually exist in rural areas and low-income communities

Food deserts are typically defined by:

  1. The lack or absence of large grocery stores and supermarkets that sell fresh produce and healthy food options
  2. Low-income populations living on tight budgets

The United States Department of Agriculture reports that about 23.5 million Americans live in food deserts, including 6.5 million children.
